How to set a wallpaper on iPhone

Download a wallpaper, move it from Files into Photos, and set it on your Lock Screen, Home Screen or both.

On an iPhone, a wallpaper has to be in the Photos app before you can use it. A download from a website lands in the Files app instead, so there is one extra step compared with Android. Once it is in Photos, setting it takes under a minute. These steps were checked on iOS 26 and work the same way on iOS 16 and later.

1. Download the wallpaper

  1. Open the wallpaper you want and tap Download HD, or Download 4K if it has one.
  2. Wait for the countdown, then tap Download now.
  3. Safari asks whether you want to download the file. Tap Download.

A small arrow appears next to the address bar while it saves. Tap it to see the file once it is done.

2. Move it into Photos

Safari saves downloads to the Files app, in a folder called Downloads. The wallpaper settings only look in Photos, so it needs moving across:

  1. Open the Files app and tap Browse.
  2. Open Downloads. It is under iCloud Drive or On My iPhone, depending on your settings.
  3. Tap the wallpaper to open it.
  4. Tap the share button (the square with an arrow pointing up) in the bottom corner.
  5. Scroll down the list and tap Save Image.

The wallpaper is now the newest picture in Photos. You can delete the copy in Files afterwards if you want the space back.

If you use Chrome instead of Safari, Chrome keeps its downloads in Files under On My iPhone → Chrome. The rest of the steps are the same.

3. Set it as your wallpaper

The quickest way is from Photos itself:

  1. Open Photos and tap the wallpaper.
  2. Tap the share button and choose Use as Wallpaper.
  3. Pinch to zoom and drag to move the picture until it sits where you want it behind the clock.
  4. Tap Add in the top corner.
  5. Tap Set as Wallpaper Pair to use it on both the Lock Screen and the Home Screen. Or tap Customize Home Screen if you want the Home Screen to look different, for example blurred or a plain colour.

You can also start from Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper → Photos. It leads to the same screen.

Change only the Home Screen

Your Lock Screen and Home Screen are kept together as a pair. To change just the Home Screen, go to Settings → Wallpaper, tap the Home Screen picture under the pair you are using, then choose Photos and pick the wallpaper. The Lock Screen stays as it was.

Make the Lock Screen look right

Touch and hold the Lock Screen, then tap Customize to fine-tune it:

  • Depth effect. On photos with a clear subject, iOS can put the subject in front of the clock. It only works when there is room above the subject and no widgets cover it, so it may switch itself off on busy images.
  • Clock colour and font. Tap the clock to change them. A light clock reads better on dark wallpapers and the other way round.
  • Perspective Zoom. This makes the wallpaper shift as you tilt the phone. It zooms the picture in slightly to do that, which can crop the edges. Turn it off from the … menu if the edges matter.

If something goes wrong

  • “Use as Wallpaper” is missing from the share menu. The image is still in Files, not Photos. Go back to step 2.
  • The download did nothing. Check for the arrow next to the address bar. If there is none, try again and tap Download when Safari asks.
  • It looks blurry or too zoomed in. The picture may be smaller than your screen, or cropped to fit its shape. See how to make a wallpaper fit and stay sharp.
